At Transval, occupational safety cooperation is part of the deal

At Transval, occupational safety is being developed alongside our parent company Posti in a joint development program. The aim is to continue to take safety management forward systematically and incorporate lessons learned into the day-to-day activities carried out with customers.

Transval employs more than 5,000 logistics professionals. Work tasks range from stocking shop shelves to industrial logistics, and most of the work is done on the customers’ premises under our supervision. Approximately 1,000 Transval employees work at our own warehouses.

Occupational safety is an essential part of working life for our company and our employees. It is important that everyone can be guaranteed a safe working day, regardless of the job description.

“Every employee is equal. We take care of everyone, which ensures that the safety of our operations can also be trusted,” says Mira Seppänen-Hakala, who is in charge of occupational safety at Transval.

Customer is an important partner

Mira plans safety management at Transval. The goal is to incorporate occupational safety into each everyday decision. The customer is an important partner in this work.

"We are professionals in logistics, but also in the safety of logistics. We want to build a safety partnership with our customers because together we can achieve the best results,” Mira says.

According to Mira, occupational safety cooperation is part of the deal at Transval. This means that in addition to logistics solutions, the customer will also benefit from our expertise and contribution to the development of occupational safety.

Safer units are created through cooperation

We have established safety cooperation groups with our customers, in which Mira participates on a weekly basis.

“When faced with a situation that needs to be resolved, we always involve the customer. We’ve got the green light for all the ideas related to occupational safety that we’ve developed together,” she says.

Together with one of our customers in the manufacturing sector, we developed a model for continuous orientation that supports the competence of logistics personnel as operating models change. On the other hand, the routine work inspection we developed with another customer serves a high-level safety culture: It ensures that we always perform routine tasks safely and according to the instructions.

The cooperation has received positive feedback. The results also speak for themselves: The units in which we have established safety cooperation groups with our customers are safer than the others.

Certificates and systematic development create a solid foundation

At Transval, occupational safety is being developed alongside our parent company Posti in a joint development program. The aim is to continue to take safety management forward systematically and incorporate lessons learned into the day-to-day activities carried out with customers.

This work is also guided by three certificates, of which ISO 45001, which focuses on occupational health and safety, is still uncommon in the logistics sector:
•    ISO 9001:2015 Quality control systems,
•    ISO 14001:2015 Environmental management system and
•    ISO 45001:2018 Occupational health and safety management.

“We have laid a solid foundation and are constantly developing practices that allow us to live up to our goals. Occupational safety is ultimately communication. It’s important that everyone’s experiences and views are heard, at all levels of the organization,” Mira says.
