Sandvik outsources in-house logistics operations at Turku plant to Transval

Optimization of material flow, development of logistics processes and operational efficiency as top criteria

Sandvik, an international manufacturer of underground loading and transport equipment for the mining industry in Turku, signed a multi-year contract with Transval for in-plant logistics. As a result of the cooperation agreement, around 30 employees will be transferred from Sandvik through the transfer of the business. Part of the logistics equipment will also be transferred to Transval. The companies will not disclose the price of the cooperation agreement.

As of 1 September 2020, Transval will be responsible for receiving material arriving at the Turku plant, collecting and delivering material to production, and transferring products and materials. The cooperation is based on Sandvik's need to improve the efficiency and development of its logistics operations. In-house logistics for industry, factories and production is Transval's core competence.

"We want to focus on our core competency, which is the development, design, manufacture, marketing and maintenance of mining machinery, and that is why we chose Transval as our logistics partner. They bring the expertise needed to streamline, automate and manage real-time logistics processes. Outsourcing our in-house logistics will improve our security of supply, increase cost efficiency and thus our competitiveness," says Mats Eriksson, Managing Director of Sandvik Finland.

"We are very proud at Transval that Sandvik chose us as their logistics partner. I warmly welcome the personnel who will be moving to us, Transval is a good employer. I believe we can offer our staff new learning and knowledge in the field of in-house logistics. We also believe that with our know-how and digital solutions, as well as by using lean six sigma methods more efficiently, we can both improve Sandvik's logistics operations and bring cost savings in logistics," says Jussi-Pekka Hoskari, Business Director of Transval Industrial Services.

In the assembly of machines worth millions of euros, there must be no unnecessary downtime while waiting for materials. At the Sandvik plant, Transval ensures optimal material and data flow, as well as the quantity and quality of logistics equipment. "We have created our own 'Dock to Stock' tool, which allows us to know in real time when and what material has been released inside the factory gates by the carriers and how the material is moving inside the factory. Based on this information, we plan and create work queues, visual representations of the logistics processes," Hoskari continues.

The information provided by the Dock to Stock tool is also made available to Sandvik in real time. The tool can be used to view the throughput of materials from different suppliers at the receiving end and, based on the information received, suppliers can be instructed on how to pack or place materials on pallets, for example, to speed up unloading and handling.
